Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
I am a nationally certified provider of TF-CBT, which stands for Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. TF-CBT is an evidence-based treatment designed to help children and adolescents (ages 3–17) process and recover from traumatic experiences.
What is TF-CBT?
TF-CBT is a research-based approach to treat children who have experienced trauma, including but not limited to traumatic grief, sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, violence, accidents, disasters, and medical trauma (Cohen, 2015).
TF-CBT is time-limited and varies between 8 and 25 sessions. Although I strive for 12, it can vary depending on a child’s needs.
TF-CBT integrates principles from several theoretical models, including cognitive-behavioral, attachment, developmental, family systems, and humanistic approaches (Cohen & Mannarino, 2015).
How do you know if your child needs TF-CBT?
Children or teens must have disclosed a traumatic experience. TF-CBT is not recommended when abuse or trauma is only suspected.
The child should exhibit prominent trauma-related symptoms such as anxiety, depression, intrusive memories, flashbacks, or behavioral difficulties.
The client must have a parent or guardian supportive of treatment, since TF-CBT relies on parental involvement.
TF-CBT is appropriate for children ages 3-17
I now accept clients with Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) and those who wish to pay privately. If you have another type of insurance, we can provide you with a receipt to submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.
